In
the spring of 1671, a virus of unknown origin transformed people in
southern England into cannibalistic vampires. The science of the time had
no answers, so the creatures were hunted down, placed in specially forged
metal coffins, and shipped to isolated island colonies where they were
buried 30 feet underground to ensure they would never be found. In
Manhattan 329 years later, a construction company, bulldozing a deep hole
for a building with multiple subbasements, unearths an old crypt. Philip
(Max) Maxwell, Ph.D., an archaeology professor at Columbia University, is
called in to retrieve the crypt as an early American archaeological
artifact. Back
in his laboratory, the professor inadvertently unleashes the very sexy
Mary Elizabeth Sullivan on the city. Like a time traveler, she wanders
through Manhattan watching, learning, feeding. She takes up residence in
the Cloisters for her prophylactic daytime rest periods and uses the
nights to explore the lesbian social clubs where she stalks her human
food. Max
must find and destroy the vampire before she assimilates into the
mainstream of modern society where she could hide forever. |
If
vampires preyed only on the undesirable members of society (e.g., muggers,
murderers, pimps, drug dealers), would it be possible for vampires and
human beings to live in harmony? Victoria
Taylor, a young and pretty widow, is transformed into a vampire in 1857 in
a section of Manhattan that will become the Sheep Meadow in the
world-famous Central Park. In spite of her transformation, Victoria
remains kindhearted and sympathetic—albeit a bloodsucker—through the
years. In
present day Manhattan, life’s not simple for Mary Hobbs, mid 30s, an
NYPD detective busted to Vice for assaulting a corrupt federal judge on
the payroll of Josh Weinstein, an upscale drug dealer who runs a number of
protected brothels. Because of department politics, Mary doesn’t know
who she can call a friend. She’s truly alone on the mean streets of NYC. While
working undercover in Times Square, Mary gets involved with Tom Bennett, a
homicide detective searching for answers to the Sheep Meadow Murders.
Little does Mary know how much she’s about to learn concerning the
murders and Victoria.
